This October 10th as a way of celebrating the 151stAnniversary of the Beginning of the Independence War, in a solemn ceremony at Santa Ifigenia Cemetery, there were place flowers upon the graves of the founding fathers of this war. This occurred on behalf of the Army General Raúl Castro Ruz; the President of the Councils of State and Ministers, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermudez and the people of Cuba.
To the act attended authorities from the Party and the Government of the province, along with a representation of the people of Santiago de Cuba, who were honoring this glorious day which marked a before and after in building the nation and Cuba´s sense of nationality.
On October 10th, 1868, in La Demajagua state, the first page in the history of Cuba´s independence was being written by Carlos Manuel de Céspedes, and a group of courageous men, who decided, just as Céspedes did, to sacrifice everything for the motherland. Idea followed later by José Martí, and carried out finally by Fidel on January 1st, 1959. This legacy is a responsibility to the future generations, and a commitment, ratified by the province´s youth that day, in front of the place our heroes rest in peace.
Espino Fernandez junior high school students said: “To think as a country means, to all of us, not no forget our history, and to support each one of the different actionsmade against the blockade and the Helm-Burton Act strengthening”.
This day was of double importance to the country, because after the approval of the new Constitution of the Republic of Cuba, the new positions in the National Assembly of the People´s Power (ANPP in Spanish) would be elected, the positions of President and Vice-President of the Republic of Cuba, and the one as Director of the ANPP, and also as Prime Minister and members of the States Council.
